UPF 50+
UPF 50+ Fabric
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and is a rating that measures the level of protection a fabric provides from ultraviolet (UV) rays. A garment with UPF 50+ offers excellent sun protection: it allows less than 2% of UV rays to pass through, blocking approximately 98% of the sun's harmful radiation.
Unlike sunscreen (which uses the SPF rating), UPF is applied to clothing and fabrics and is laboratory tested to evaluate their effectiveness against UVA and UVB rays.
Why choose a fabric with UPF 50+?
-
High protection during sun exposure
-
Ideal for outdoor activities such as sports, beach, or mountains
-
Also recommended for sensitive skin or children
Warnings about sun exposure
While UPF 50+ fabrics offer excellent UV protection, it's still important to follow some precautions:
-
They don't completely replace sunscreen: Areas of the body not covered by fabrics (such as the face, hands, and feet) should be protected with broad-spectrum sunscreen.
-
Effectiveness may decrease over time: Protection may decrease with wear, frequent washing, or if the fabric gets wet.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure during the hottest hours of the day (11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), even with protective clothing.
-
Protection isn't complete: No fabric, even with UPF 50+, blocks 100% of UV rays. Excessive exposure can still damage the skin over time.
For optimal protection: combine UPF 50+ clothing with hats, sunglasses, shade, and sunscreen.
